Pause Music Welcomes Bryan Potvin On Their Live Stream.

The Northern Pikes' vocalist and guitarist appeared via a live stream Saturday night, on Pause Music's YouTube channel and Facebook page for a semi-stripped down performance.

Potvin, who resides in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, and known for writing some of the band's most iconic hits, including "She Ain't Pretty", appeared live to delighted fans and performed songs from the Pikes, his solo album 'Heartbledwhite', Kane & Potvin, as well as an exceptional rendition of The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby' to end the live event. In lieu of purchasing a ticket for the event, Pause Music suggested a PWYC (pay what you can) alternative with all proceeds to benefit the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. You can contribute  here.

Once the stream was live, Bryan was joined by Glenn Patscha on keyboards and quickly kicked off the event with an instrumental version of Billie Holiday's  'Darn that Dream'. The song accentuated his extraordinary finger pickings and soulful playing, hence why I have always believed he is one of the most underrated guitarists in the music business.

Successfully completing the introductory number, Bryan jumped into a selection from his second solo album, Heartbledwhite, a track called 'Standing By You'. Quite the contrast from the fast tempo fun song on the album, this version was slightly slowed down and vocally was sincere and haunting.

Still clutching a jet blue Gretsch firebird, Bryan revisited the Northern Pikes' Neptune album and did a wonderful version of Hold On, followed by the inspirational story behind his reason for writing the tune. This Pikes' album remains one of my favourites of theirs, even after 28 years since its release.
Switching out the Gretsch for an acoustic, Bryan returned to Heartbledwhite, for an emotional version of one of my favourite tracks off the album, River of Hope. As he jokingly spoke about the long breaks between solo efforts, one can only hope he does release another album. If you have yet to experience Bryan's solo material, I highly recommend it. The combination of strong guitar tones and meaningful lyrics contributes to the bulk of the album and is constantly on my playlists both at home and out.

During a chance meeting in a Toronto record store, Bryan ran into Kevin Kane. Kane (The Grapes of Wrath) teamed with Potvin and in 2016, the duo released a self-titled cd that also included a tour in support of the material. 'I'm Here For You' is a haunting sentimental track on the album to begin with, but there was something about hearing Bryan perform it during this live stream that made you appreciate how beautiful the track really is.

As we previously heard from the Pikes in interviews and social media posts, the guys are working on an acoustic tribute of eight tracks from Snow in June to celebrate it's 30 Anniversary this year. With the support of backing tracks by Jay, Don and Kevin, Bryan performed 'Dream Away' and 'She Ain't Pretty'. There is something special hearing the 2020 versions of these epic hits. The Pikes have always reinvented themselves over the last 40 years, this is a prime example of just that.

Trading the acoustic for electric once more for the last time, Potvin began the final number of the live event. Initially I was thinking, this sounds familiar to the intro of 'Things I Do For Money', but once he began to sing, it was a completely revamped version of 'Eleanor Rigby'. Something magical hearing Bryan do his version of the classic.

The live stream came to a close and many happy Pikes/Potvin fans continued to comment about what they had witnessed.

Donations are still being accepted for a great cause at Pause Music's Official Website.

Since the country (the world infact) has been locked down due to Covid-19, resulting in all live events being postponed, musicians, including Potvin, have turned to online platforms to get their music to their fans. Bryan recently appeared in the latest Rob Wells and Friends collaboration, a cover of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer' with musicians from around the world. Lawrence Gowan and Edwin also make an appearance.
